|discussion=<p><i>Phyllanthus urinaria</i> probably is native only to Asia; it is now found in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide, where it is aggressively weedy in disturbed sites. It was first reported in the United States in the 1940s and spread rapidly. It is unique among <i>Phyllanthus</i> species in the flora area in that the leaves are sensitive to the touch, folding like the leaflets of the sensitive plant, Mimosa pudica. <i>Phyllanthus urinaria</i> has a long history of use in folk medicine to treat a wide variety of ailments and is the subject of intense pharmacological research. Subspecies nudicarpus Rossignol & Haicour, is restricted to eastern Asia and is not weedy.</p>
