|discussion=<p><i>Encalypta affinis</i> is the only species of the genus in the flora area with papillae on the basal leaf cells. Specimens with short, excurrent costae and cuspidate leaf apices have been referred to <i></i>var.<i> affinis</i> while the other extreme, costae ending below apex and leaves muticous, to <i></i>var.<i> macounii</i>. This species could be confused with <i>E. ciliata</i>, also with a double peristome but with pitted instead of heavily papillose spores. <i>Encalypta procera</i> has a longer double peristome, granulate spores, and propagula on the stem tomentum.</p>
