Plants dioecious. Stems erect to ascending, not fleshy. Inflorescences mostly terminal, well-developed spikes or spicate panicles. Pistillate flowers: tepals absent or 1–5. Utricles indehiscent or dehiscence circumscissile.

North America, Mexico, Central America, n South America, introduced elsewhere.
