Herbs 2–8 dm. Stems: hairs long, sometimes short, soft. Leaves 0(–5)-lobed. Bracts distally red, orange-red, or pale orange, rarely yellow, broadly lanceolate to oblong, 0–5-lobed; lobes linear or often narrowly oblanceolate, long. Calyces proximally pale green or green, sometimes with a yellow central band, 14–26 mm; abaxial and adaxial clefts 3–8 mm, 20–44% of calyx length; lobes broadly lanceolate to ovate or oblong, apex acute, obtuse, or rounded. Corolla beaks 9–18(–23) mm; abaxial lip deep green with white teeth or red with green teeth. 2n = 24, 48, 72.


Phenology: Flowering Mar–Sep.
Habitat: Chaparral, dry rocky or gravelly slopes, open conifer forests, sagebrush steppes.
Elevation: 100–2900 m.

Distribution

Calif., Mexico (Baja California).

Discussion

Variety martini has a wide distribution across California west of the Sierra Nevada crest and extends south to the Sierra San Pedro Mártir in northern Baja California. It occurs from low elevations to the montane zone.
