Leaves: petiole usually winged; basal blade oblanceolate. Flowering stems and inflorescence branches tomentose.

Phenology: Flowering May–Oct.
Habitat: Sandy flats and slopes, chaparral communities, oak and montane conifer woodlands
Elevation: (100-)500-2200 m

Discussion

Variety cithariforme is usually uncommon throughout its range in the mountains and foothills of southwestern California (Kern, Los Angeles, San Bernardino, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties). In vigorous plants, the winged petiole is striking.
