Stems: base erect; branches 1–5(or 6) pairs, usually straight. Inflorescences: bract surfaces hairy, hairs glandular and eglandular bristles, teeth much longer than wide. Flowers: corolla 6–8(–10) mm. 2n = 44 (Europe).


Phenology: Flowering early summer–fall.
Habitat: Meadows, pastures, roadsides, dunes, wood margins, scrub, grassy places, rocky shorelines, open, moist calcareous barrens.
Elevation: 0–300 m.

Distribution

Greenland, B.C., N.B., Nfld. and Labr., N.S., Ont., P.E.I., Que., Maine, Europe (British Isles, Norway), Atlantic Islands (Iceland).
