Stems 80–450 mm. Rhizomes 3–5 mm diam. Leaves on mid portions of emergent shoots in whorls of 3–5(or 6), oblanceolate or oblong to broadly obovate, 6–15 × 2–8 mm, midvein inconspicuous, lateral veins present, sometimes obscure, ape× obtuse, rounded, or blunt, tip not curled in dried plants. Flowers bisexual; filaments equal to or shorter than anthers. Drupes 1.8–2 × 0.6–1.2 mm. 2n = 32.
Phenology: Flowering summer.
Habitat: Saline or brackish lagoons and pools of maritime coastlines.
Elevation: 0 m.
Distribution
B.C., Man., Nfld. and Labr. (Labr.), N.W.T., Nunavut, Ont., Que., Yukon, Alaska, Eurasia.
Discussion
The leaves of Hippuris tetraphylla tend to be fleshy or leathery, which is typical of obligate halophytes.
