--><p><i>Lyonia ligustrina</i> is most closely related to the eastern Asian species of the genus; it is quite variable in stature, indument, leaf size and shape, and inflorescence structure. Plants of the Appalachian Mountains and northward usually can be readily differentiated from those of the southeastern Atlantic coastal plain, the Gulf coastal plain, and adjacent regions; intermediates occur, especially in Alabama, northern Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina.</p>
