Subspecies 2 (1 in the flora).

Subspecies gibbosum (Wallich) D. A. Sutton, which occurs in the eastern Mediterranean, southwestern and south-central Asia, and northeastern Africa, has more slender stems, smaller flowers, and more lax inflorescences than subsp. orontium (D.
