Plants 15–30 cm, base usually not swollen. Bracts, bracteoles, and calyces glandular-puberulent, hairs 0.1 mm. Corollas 12–14 mm; palatal folds glabrous; lips and distal tube glandular-puberulent, glabrous or sparsely puberulent at constriction and proximally; filaments glabrous, anthers glabrous or with a few glandular hairs near connective. 2n = 48.
Phenology: Flowering May–Aug.
Habitat: Rocky slopes of loose decomposed granite.
Elevation: 1200–2000 m.
Discussion
Subspecies valida is restricted to a few mountain slopes in the San Gabriel and Topatopa mountains of southern California. It is parasitic on Garrya (Garryaceae) and is associated with chaparral shrubs including Ceanothus (Rhamnaceae), Cercocarpus (Rosaceae), Eriogonum (Polygonaceae), and Quercus (Fagaceae).
