Stems decumbent to ascending, 2–8 cm, retrorsely hairy or puberulent. Leaves ± scabrous, 7–23 × 2–5 mm; blade obovate or oblanceolate. 2n = 16.
Phenology: Flowering May–Jul.
Habitat: Sagebrush shrublands, pinyon-juniper and scrub oak woodlands.
Elevation: 2100–2600 m.

Holmgren (1984) stated that some specimens of var. crandallii from the Abajo Mountains of San Juan County, Utah, approach var. atratus in leaf indument.
