Stems ascending to erect, 20–70(–90) cm. Cauline leaves: blade ovate to lanceolate. Thyrses 4–30 cm, verticillasters 4–12. Flowers: calyx lobes lanceolate, rarely ovate, apex acuminate, rarely acute; corolla 16–25(–28) mm.

Phenology: Flowering May–Jul.
Habitat: Sandy or gravelly slopes, sagebrush shrublands.
Elevation: 1300–3200 m.

Discussion

Variety cyananthus passes into var. subglaber in southeastern Idaho and west-central Wyoming; some specimens from that area are difficult to assign to variety with confidence.
