Leaves opposite, cauline (7–)10–50 × (5–)8–20 mm, blade ovate, sometimes distals oblanceolate, spatulate, or lanceolate, margins sharply serrate. Flowers: calyx lobes ovate to lanceolate, 3–5(–6.3) × 1–1.9 mm, apex acute to acuminate; corolla 12–18 mm, glandular-pubescent externally, glandular-pubescent internally, sometimes obscurely adaxially, abaxial lobes white to ochroleucous, sometimes tinged lavender; staminode glabrous, sometimes distal 1–2 mm sparsely pilose, hairs yellow, to 0.2 mm. 2n = 16.


Phenology: Flowering May–Jul.
Habitat: Rocky hillsides, talus slopes, rock outcrops, gravelly banks, sagebrush shrublands, juniper woodlands, open pine forests.
Elevation: 400–2600 m.

Distribution

Idaho, Mont., Nev., Oreg., Wash., Wyo.

Discussion

Variety deustus is widespread in the Columbia Basin and Central Rocky Mountains from northwestern and north-central Wyoming and south-central Montana to northern Idaho and western Washington and to western Oregon and northern Nevada.
