Leaves: basal usually persisting. Flowers: calyx lobes 7–11 × 2.6–3.2(–3.7) mm; corolla 25–33 mm, sparsely glandular-pubescent externally, limb blue to bluish purple; pollen sacs 1.8–2.4 mm; style 17–22 mm.

Phenology: Flowering May–Jul.
Habitat: Sagebrush and mountain mahogany shrublands, pinyon-juniper, pine, aspen, and spruce-fir woodlands.
Elevation: 1600–3200 m.

Discussion

Variety scariosus occurs mostly in the Aquarius, Fish Lake, and Wasatch plateaus. Populations are documented in Carbon, Duchesne, Emery, Grand, Juab, Piute, Sanpete, Sevier, Uintah, and Wayne counties, Utah. A collection from the East Tavaputs Plateau in western Garfield County, Colorado (R. E. Umber, M. L. Moorman & W. Robertson 1336, RM), appears to be this taxon, though it is somewhat disjunct from other populations. It has obscurely glandular-pubescent calyces and corollas, and pollen sacs ca. 2.4 mm.
