Plants 0.01–0.1 m, (dwarf), not clonal or clonal by layering or rhizomes. Largest medial blades hypostomatous, amphistomatous, or hemiamphistomatous, abaxial surface glaucous. Catkins from lateral buds. Staminate flowers: filaments glabrous. Pistillate flowers: abaxial nectary sometimes present, then distinct or connate to adaxial and forming a cup; ovary sometimes glaucous, glabrous, tomentose, or pubescent to very densely villous.

North America, Asia.
