Young twigs with sparse, white, stellate hairs in addition to scattered, orange-brown or dark-brown, stalked, stellate hairs proximally. Leaf blades: margins often irregularly undulate, usually weakly 3-lobed or coarsely toothed, sometimes entire, abaxial surface with scattered, white, stellate hairs in addition to scattered, orange-brown or dark-brown, stalked, stellate hairs on some leaves, surface visible through pubescence, adaxial surface with scattered, stellate pubescence. Pedicels with white, stellate hairs of various lengths. Flowers: calyx with white, stellate hairs of various lengths, margins and teeth densely glandular, at least some teeth to 1 mm; style hairy from proximal end to 50–70% of total length.


Phenology: Flowering Apr–May; fruiting Jul–Sep.
Habitat: Dry, wooded bottomlands, rocky banks and ledges
Elevation: 500-700 m

Discussion

The range of subsp. stellatus is contiguous with the southern boundary of subsp. platanifolius at the southern edge of the Edwards Plateau. It is rare throughout most of its range.
