Shrubs or trees, erect, 20-100 dm, not rhizomatous. Leaves tardily deciduous. Inflorescences terminal, racemes, 5-17-flowered, borne on previous year’s shoots or on older woody stems. Pedicels articulated with calyx tube. Flowers: sepals 5; petals 5, connate for nearly their entire lengths, corolla campanulate to urceolate; stamens 10, included; anthers with awns, tubules 3-4 mm, with terminal pores. Berries pseudo 10-locular. Seeds 2-7.

c, se United States, Mexico, West Indies, Central America.
